One of the first questions I hear after a family books a session is:
“Where should we take our photos?”
If you’re looking for family photo locations in Northern Virginia, there are so many beautiful options throughout Stafford, Fredericksburg, and the surrounding area.
After all, the location helps set the tone for your entire gallery. Maybe you picture your family running through an open field at sunset, snuggling together beneath the trees, or wandering through a beautiful garden while your kids explore.
Luckily, there are so many beautiful locations for family photos throughout Stafford, Fredericksburg, and Northern Virginia.
When helping my families choose a location, I look at more than just what photographs well. I also consider your children’s ages, the season, the amount of walking involved, your outfits, and the overall feeling you want your photographs to have.
With that in mind, here are 10 of my favorite locations to consider for your next family or maternity session.
1. Government Island — Stafford, Virginia
For families who love a natural, relaxed setting, Government Island is one of my favorite options close to home in Stafford.
The walking trail takes you through wooded areas, wetlands, and an elevated boardwalk before reaching the island. Because of that variety, we can create several different backdrops without needing to travel between locations.
I especially love Government Island for families who want their photos to feel casual and connected rather than overly formal.
This location is great for:
- Relaxed family sessions
- Families with children who enjoy exploring
- Natural greenery and wooded backdrops
- Casual or earthy outfits
- Spring, summer, and fall sessions
There is some walking involved, so comfortable shoes for getting to our shooting spots are always a good idea.
2. Chatham Manor — Fredericksburg, Virginia
If you want something a little more timeless and elegant, Chatham Manor offers a completely different feel.
The historic Georgian manor overlooks Fredericksburg and the Rappahannock River, and the grounds include beautiful gardens, brick, stone, mature trees, and architectural details.
It’s especially beautiful when paired with slightly dressier outfits and is one of my favorite choices for maternity portraits or families looking for a more polished setting.
This location is great for:
- Maternity sessions
- Timeless family portraits
- Dressier wardrobes
- Historic architecture
- Garden-inspired photographs
- Spring and fall sessions
Even with the more formal surroundings, we can still keep your session relaxed, playful, and focused on genuine connection.
3. Old Mill Park — Fredericksburg, Virginia
Old Mill Park is a great option for families who want plenty of room for their children to move and play.
With large trees, open grassy areas, and views along the Rappahannock River, we can create a lot of variety within one session.
This is one I especially like for families with younger children because we don’t have to keep everyone confined to a tiny picture-perfect spot. There is room to walk, play, cuddle, and let kids be kids.
This location is great for:
- Families with toddlers and young children
- Casual, playful sessions
- River views
- Large trees and greenery
- Golden-hour family photos
4. Downtown Fredericksburg — Fredericksburg, Virginia
Not every family session has to happen in a field.
For something a little different, historic Downtown Fredericksburg gives us brick sidewalks, historic architecture, textured walls, charming streets, and plenty of little corners to explore.
I love this option for families who want their photographs to have more of a lifestyle or editorial feel while still keeping the session relaxed.
Rather than staying in one spot, we can walk together and photograph your family naturally as we move through downtown.
This location is great for:
- Families wanting something different from fields and parks
- Lifestyle-inspired sessions
- Older children
- Couples and maternity sessions
- Neutral or dressier wardrobes
- Year-round sessions
5. Slaughter Pen Farm — Fredericksburg, Virginia
If you’re drawn to open spaces and a quieter, more natural setting, Slaughter Pen Farm is worth considering.
The preserved landscape has wide-open fields and trails that can create a simple, uncluttered backdrop where the focus stays on your family.
This type of location works beautifully when the sun is low and warm. In particular, it’s a great fit especially if you love the look of movement, tall grasses, and wide environmental portraits.
This location is great for:
- Golden-hour sessions
- Open-field photographs
- Families who love a natural setting
- Warm, earthy wardrobes
- Late summer and fall portraits
6. Manassas National Battlefield Park — Manassas, Virginia
If you’ve ever seen those dreamy family photos with tall grasses, rolling fields, huge skies, and glowing sunset light, Manassas National Battlefield Park is exactly that kind of location.
Of all the family photo locations in Northern Virginia, Manassas National Battlefield is one of my favorites for wide-open landscapes and golden-hour light.
There is plenty of room for children to move around, which makes it ideal for the kind of candid, movement-filled photographs I love to create.
This location is great for:
- Golden-hour family sessions
- Maternity portraits
- Tall grasses and open fields
- Families with active children
- Late summer and fall
- Soft, romantic photographs
Because the park is so large, I’ll help you choose the specific meeting area rather than simply sending you to “Manassas Battlefield.”
7. Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park — Bristow, Virginia
Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park is another beautiful choice if you love open meadows but want something that can feel a little quieter and more tucked away.
The combination of fields, natural trails, wooded edges, and changing seasonal color gives us plenty of variety while keeping the overall gallery cohesive.
I particularly love locations like this for families who don’t want to feel as though they’re posing for the camera the entire time.
This location is great for:
- Candid family sessions
- Open fields and meadows
- Natural, neutral scenery
- Families with young children
- Fall sessions
- Relaxed wardrobes
8. Green Spring Gardens — Alexandria, Virginia
For families who love flowers, greenery, and a more romantic garden setting, Green Spring Gardens is a beautiful Alexandria option.
The property offers landscaped gardens and plenty of seasonal variety, which makes it especially lovely for maternity sessions and families wanting something softer and more polished.
Professional photography currently requires a photography permit and advance paid reservation, so this is a location we would plan for ahead of time.
This location is great for:
- Maternity sessions
- Spring family photos
- Floral and garden backdrops
- Dressier outfits
- Romantic, feminine galleries
- Families closer to Alexandria
9. River Farm — Alexandria, Virginia
If you love the idea of gardens but still want plenty of open, natural scenery, River Farm is another beautiful Alexandria-area option.
Its combination of landscaped areas, trees, open spaces, and the feeling of being tucked away from the city makes it a lovely choice for family and maternity sessions.
This is the kind of location I’d recommend when you want your gallery to feel romantic and refined without becoming too formal.
This location is great for:
- Family sessions
- Maternity portraits
- Garden-inspired photographs
- Couples
- Spring through fall
- Families wanting an elevated outdoor setting
Because photography policies and fees can change at privately managed properties, we’ll always confirm current requirements before planning your session here.
10. Meadowlark Botanical Gardens — Vienna, Virginia
For a full-on garden experience, it’s hard to beat Meadowlark Botanical Gardens.
With flowers, landscaped gardens, pathways, trees, and changing scenery throughout the seasons, it can create an incredibly varied gallery without needing to leave the property.
I especially love this type of location for maternity sessions or families who envision something romantic and polished.
This location is great for:
- Maternity portraits
- Spring and early summer family sessions
- Floral backdrops
- Dressier wardrobes
- Romantic photographs
- Families in Fairfax and the surrounding Northern Virginia area
Photography requirements can vary, so we’ll confirm the current reservation or permit requirements before your session.
When choosing between family photo locations in Northern Virginia, I’ll help you find a setting that fits your family, wardrobe, season, and vision.
