One of the first questions I hear after a family books a session is:

“Where should we take our photos?”

If you’re looking for family photo locations in Northern Virginia, there are so many beautiful options throughout Stafford, Fredericksburg, and the surrounding area.

After all, the location helps set the tone for your entire gallery. Maybe you picture your family running through an open field at sunset, snuggling together beneath the trees, or wandering through a beautiful garden while your kids explore.

Luckily, there are so many beautiful locations for family photos throughout Stafford, Fredericksburg, and Northern Virginia.

When helping my families choose a location, I look at more than just what photographs well. I also consider your children’s ages, the season, the amount of walking involved, your outfits, and the overall feeling you want your photographs to have.

With that in mind, here are 10 of my favorite locations to consider for your next family or maternity session.

1. Government Island — Stafford, Virginia

For families who love a natural, relaxed setting, Government Island is one of my favorite options close to home in Stafford.

The walking trail takes you through wooded areas, wetlands, and an elevated boardwalk before reaching the island. Because of that variety, we can create several different backdrops without needing to travel between locations.

I especially love Government Island for families who want their photos to feel casual and connected rather than overly formal.

Rather than staying in one spot, we can walk together and photograph your family naturally as we move through downtown.

Of all the family photo locations in Northern Virginia, Manassas National Battlefield is one of my favorites for wide-open landscapes and golden-hour light.

There is plenty of room for children to move around, which makes it ideal for the kind of candid, movement-filled photographs I love to create.

I especially love this type of location for maternity sessions or families who envision something romantic and polished.

When choosing between family photo locations in Northern Virginia, I’ll help you find a setting that fits your family, wardrobe, season, and vision.

If you're hoping for a particular season, I recommend reaching out before the calendar fills up.

For spring sessions: January through March is a great time to start planning.

For fall sessions: I recommend booking during the summer, especially if you need a weekend date.

For holiday card photos: Plan on having your session photographed in September or October so you aren't rushing to order cards at the last minute.

Popular fall evenings tend to go quickly, so the earlier you reach out, the more flexibility we'll have with your location and date.



For most outdoor sessions, I love photographing during golden hour, when the sun is lower in the sky and the light becomes softer and warmer.

That typically means starting our session in the hours leading up to sunset rather than in the middle of the afternoon.

The exact timing changes throughout the year, and certain locations photograph better at slightly different times, so I'll help determine the best start time for the location and season you choose.

And if you have very young children whose bedtime makes a late summer sunset impossible, that's okay too. We'll choose a location and time that works for your family rather than forcing everyone into a schedule that guarantees an unhappy toddler.

The prettiest location isn't always automatically the best location for your family.

If you have a two-year-old who wants to run everywhere, an open field or park may work much better than a manicured garden where we're constantly trying to keep little hands away from the flowers.
If you're planning a maternity session in a beautiful flowing dress, on the other hand, a garden or historic property may fit your vision perfectly.
